Christmas Bird Count 2023

19 Tsothóhrha/December 2023 – KEPO once again lead Kahnawà:ke’s participation in Bird Protection Quebec’s annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on Saturday, December 16, 2023. The CBC is a citizen-science project that covers two 24-km wide circles; one centered in Montreal West and the other in Hudson. The goal is to collect important data on the birds that inhabit these regions each winter.

Two teams began at sunrise continuing until late afternoon and covered specific areas in the community. The Inland Team was in the areas of Big Fence, Tekakwitha Island, green spaces along the seaway, and golf clubs along the 207 and 138.

The Seaway Team was in the area of the North Wall from the Ste. Catherine locks to the end of the Kahnawà:ke land base.

Highlights from this year’s count include Northern Pintails, American Wigeons, and a Red-tailed Hawk.
